The Royal College of Music is delighted to announce that the international rock, jazz, classical and punk drummer Benny Greb will headline the RCM Festival of Percussion 2017.
An afternoon drum clinic will provide the opportunity to hear Benny Greb discussing his approach to drumming technique, before he joins the superb RCM Big Band and acclaimed director Guy Barker for an evening concert celebrating the centenary year of trailblazing virtuoso jazz drummer Buddy Rich.
Now in its seventh year, the RCM Festival of Percussion has become an established highlight of the UK percussion calendar and delivers engaging workshops and thrilling musical performances.
The jam-packed day will feature performances from percussion quartet Amadinda, the BBC Symphony Orchestra’s Timpani and Percussion Sections and drummer Ralph Salmins, who’s celebrating 25 years of teaching at the RCM. Twice ranked top ten Studio Drummer in Rhythm Magazine Readers Polls, Salmins will be featuring with his own Funk band, in a ‘close up and personal’ Rhythm section clinic and with his Jazz trio.
There will be even more on offer for younger visitors this year, with a special lunchtime concert with O Duo and the Band of the Royal Air Force Regiment, Brazilian workshops led by The Lion King percussionist Damien Manning, and family marimba, drum kit, cajon and gamelan workshops (entry on a first-come, first-served basis).
The 2017 festival also offers the chance to try out the RCM’s performance simulator and to talk to representatives from some of the world’s leading percussion companies and distributors at the festival’s trade fair.
David Hockings, Head of Percussion at the RCM and festival founder, said: ‘I’m thrilled to see the RCM’s Festival of Percussion go from strength to strength year on year, and I am looking forward to welcoming hundreds of percussion fans to our 2017 events. An opportunity to see Benny Greb perform and share his vast knowledge is not to be missed!’
