Sad news, RIP Martin

Was speaking to Clark Tracey on Wednesday, he was on his way to dep for Martin in Swansea as he had been hospitalised after a heart attack.

Two great drummers in one week, just terrible.

Yamaha. Ludwig. Zildjian.

I used to see Martin play a lot in the late 80s. He seemed to visit Birmingham pretty regularly with Ronnie Scott's group amongst others. I got to know him and he would invite me to hang out at his house or Ronnie's if I was in London back in the days before I lived there. I consider him very important in my development as a small group jazz player. He was a great drummer and a good guy with a big personality who will be greatly missed.

Very sad. I used to make a point of watching the Oscar Peterson show on telly every Sunday night many years ago, Martin Drew was wonderful on drums with OP. RIP Mr Drew.

Tragedy heaped upon even more tragedy.
Just been in Ronnie Scotts (2pm) for the Georgie Fame recording with James Pearson for the clubs' FM Radio Broadcast.
Martin suffered a massive heart attack the other night and didn't recover from the treatment.
Siobhan and the staff are fighting back even more tears today.
They're rocked to stony silence over all this sudden loss.
I think we're in the twilight zone guys.
Better check that old life insurance policy in the bottom drawer eh?

I started off in the music business with nothing and 35 years later, I still have most of it left.

A great shame and another very sad loss. I watched him play at Ronnie Scott's many times and would always pester him in the downstairs bar. I'm sure he used to growl audibly when he did solos!

He came from here in Northampton too.

RIP, Mr Drew.

Terrible loss of a great player. Used to see him occasionally playing with Morrisey Mullen back in the 80's, and although he was primarily a mainstream jazz drummer, he held his own in a jazzfunk setting too. R.I.P.

Again, very sad news. There are many British drummers I admire, but without cliche, I admired Martin Drew and Chris Dagley as highly as any other!

These two great drummers, and a young singer I know have died recently. I guess things do come in threes!

Sad days!

Those 'Oscar Peterson: Words and Music' shows were wonderful. The one with Victor Feldman as a guest particularly.

Sad news indeed. A great player.

That's a real shame - I remember going to watch him regularly in the 1970's at the Leather Bottle in South Wimbledon. Great player and very approachable.

Martin's work with Oscar on the Beeb got me into Jazz. Great memories.
There's a wonderful cartoon drawing of Martin at The Bell pub in Bath with him pictured at the kit with a knife and fork rather than with sticks.
RIP Martin.

Terrible loss, I saw him on TV, then many times at Ronnie's, Bull's Head at Barnes and, and at the Hazlitt in Maidstone with Ronnie Scott. Met him a few times and he seemed a nice fellow, and immensely talented, but sadly nowhere near as well-known as he should have been. I read an interview in Crescendo with Oscar Peterson who said that Martin was the best drummer in the world for his music, high praise indeed. I heard radio 3 sessions with Paz and Morrisey Mullen where he showed that he could be very funky, as well as his familiar combo jazz side. A really great drummer, and one of my absolute favourites.
